Back to School with Glad Food Storage

by Elena on August 29, 2012 in Education

Back to school season is upon us, along with the days of packing school lunches and healthy snacks.

Principessa is one of those children who has never taken to buying a school lunch, and this year we decided to look for a few new alternatives to our traditional peanut butter sandwiches.  The daughter to foodie parents, for better or worse, Principessa has developed a palate for gourmet and the art of food presentation.

The trick for us for both lunches and snacks are that they be healthy. I am not a fan of high doses of sugar for lunch, knowing that children need high quality and long lasting fuel to be successful in school.  I have on occasion fallen victim to the already made “peanut butter pie” because well, they are easy and….done.  But all in all, we have cut a whole lot of vegetables, bought a great many organic yogurts, and even used left overs of pasta.

This year we have a few new additions to our school lunch and snack repertoire. We even had a taste testing day this week to try everything out and see what new recipes would make the final cut.

The two new winning lunches are:

Mini Peanut Butter Wraps

Mini Peppers Stuffed with BabyBel Light Cheese and a tiny bit of Salsa

(We tried cucumber and cheese sandwiches, but these were not a hit)

And as a new treat for us since I am working from home and can not visit for lunch occasionally, I created a new salad with grains, avocado, spring mix lettuce, turkey slices, and salsa as a dressing.

Bonus to the new recipe alternatives that Principessa will enjoy each day, I know that her lunch and snacks will be well protected (no leaky lunch boxes) in their Glad® Food Storage Products.  Also, and this is no small issue, having lunches in reusable containers makes it easy to bring all the leftovers home, which allows me to see what she ate or as the case is some days, didn’t eat.  (Often because there was “not enough time” aka….she spent too much time talking.)

What about you? What are your favorite back to school recipes?

You can even share your own Back to School recipes, tips and ideas within the “Mom Made” promotion on Glad’s Facebook page! Before August 31st, everyone who shares a tip or idea is eligible for a chance to win a Lunch Kit for their kids’ entire class.

I am so impressed that she will eat those items! I have your typical chicken nuggets and turkey sandwich kids. Sigh.
