Couples Getaway at The Hotel Monaco in Alexandria Virginia

by Elena on September 12, 2012 in Travel

Imagine two days where you had the chance to play tourist in your local area, take time to relax and recharge, and spend time outdoors being active with your spouse or partner? No kids, just you, taking a much needed night away? Sounds heavenly right?

Imagine making this a reality with a one night getaway in one of the best Washington DC area hotspots: Alexandria Virginia.  Old Town Alexandria offers visitors  a mix of historic and trend sites, restaurants, boutiques, and activities.  Boaters, artists, history and fitness buffs will all find something to do in Alexandria.

Rocket and I recently had the opportunity to get away for the night in the hip and elegant town of Alexandria at the Hotel Monaco, a Kimpton property in the heart of Alexandria.

To say that this is EXACTLY what we needed would be an understatement.

There are five key elements to enjoying a couples night away.

Have some wine

The Hotel Monaco offers a daily wine reception  from 5 to 6 pm. where you can sample selections of red or white wine in the elegant and eclectic lobby with other visitors (or you can find a plush couch and sit on your own).

The first thing we noticed about our room was the extremely large bath tub in the bathroom. At home, I rarely make the time to soak in the tub….but here, where we had plenty of time? A bath with jets, in a tub that I could have gone scuba diving in, was decadent. Also? Wearing my Kimpton Hotel leopard print robe? It is hard not to relax while wearing this robe (I am actually seriously considering buying one for myself at home!)

Take a tour or two

Playing tourists in a town that you have visited many times, but never as a tourist is a great way to see a city in a new way.  We explored Gadsby’s Tavern and took in the folklore of the Ghost and Graveyard Tour.  Gadsby’s Tavern Museum takes visitors though the two buildings that made up the 18th century equivalent of a five star hotel for men traveling up and down the east coast that stopped in the busy port city of Alexandria.

The Ghost and Graveyard tour led by an 18th century costumed guide, takes visitors on an evening tour through the historic city center for an hour of folklore, legends, and stories that are both spooky and funny. Like the story of John Alexander that makes you wonder if you might encounter this gentleman who swore that he “would be back” while sitting in Market Square.

Celebrate an evening away with a great meal (or two!)

Alexandria is full of foodie establishments for every meal, including Jackson 20 in the Hotel Monaco.  We decided that part of what we love about Alexandria is being able to walk around, so we headed out of the hotel for dinner to Brabo restaurant (located in the Hotel Lorien, another Kimpton property).   For lunch the next day, we spied what looked like a cute and popular neighborhood restaurant, the Fontaine Caffe’ and Creperie. If you are ever in Alexandria and are in the mood for sweet or savory crepes, this is a must visit (my favorite was the Moroccan crepe).

Get active

Alexandria sits along the Potomac River making it a perfect location to access the Mount Vernon trail for a run or bike ride. We chose to see the trail on bike thanks to the folks at Bike and Roll a full service rental and tour facility in the heart of Alexandria. We rode along the trail, almost all the way to Mount Vernon, for an eleven mile (ish) ride past Jones Point Lighthouse, and through Dyke Marsh.  Being active together is one of the things I hope to incorporate more and more into our travel, both locally and father away, because you are able to see and do things you might not otherwise see, it is good for us, and we always end up having the best time.

Staycations have become a great way for busy families to enjoy the elements of traveling without all of the cost and time associated with taking bigger trips farther away from home. But just like regularly scheduled date nights, taking a night away, even in your local area, as a couple, is equally important for the travel and adventure seeking couple that during the work week is swamped with deadlines, meetings, and day to day life.

What about you? What would you do locally if you could get away for just a day?

Kimpton Hotels and the Hotel Monaco hosted us for our one night getaway and Visit Alexandria provided us with tickets to experience the sites of Alexandria during our stay.  No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own.

I love it when hotels offer happy hours or wine tastings. It think it’s a great way to start off an evening and it really makes a place stand out in my mind.

Absolutely. They also have a kids hour for the younger set with snacks and activities! I was very impressed with the attention to detail to make every guest feel welcome.

I’m adding this to my list of local getaways since we love Alexandria! The first time I ever stayed at a Kimpton, I was a fan for life! I love their happy hours, service, and amenities! We stayed at the Park 70 in NYC with the kids once and they couldn’t have been nicer!

Looks amazing! Plus it’s close enough to drop the kids with grandma and grandpa and head there. :)

the huz and I have a weekend getaway ahead of us and I hadn’t even started to think beyond our usual trip to Annapolis. Perhaps we’ll travel a tiny bit west instead.
