Getting Fit at BlogHer

by Elena on August 7, 2012 in Fitness

A social media conference like BlogHer is about learning and networking. But also? Social media conferences and the brands that sponsor the conferences have realized that fitness and an active lifestyle are important to many of us and have integrated workouts and fitness activities into events. During BlogHer11 I ran a 5k.  At Blogalicious 11 I participated in a Your Shape Fitness Evolved workout. At Mom 2.0 earlier this spring I took a Zumba class organized by Together Counts.

At BlogHer this year I took things up a notch workout wise. In fact, from my schedule, you might say that I went to BlogHer12 to workout.  Which is not exactly true, but my fitness journey is a big part of what I talk about here and so yes, I was very focused on fitness at BlogHer.

My BlogHer Fitness Workouts

The first workout was with Go Army.

The good news is that I can “swim” like a champ. My plank is also not half bad, nor is my bridge. Go Army pushups though? Combined with squats, jumps, and counts that are too fast? Lets just say I took a knee on more than one occasion and reverted back to regular old pushups.

The second workout was with THE Rockettes.

Yes, as in THE Rockettes.  As in the ones at Radio City Music Hall. (Thank you Pfizer for sponsoring this event!)  The good news here is that the two Rockettes that were their to train us were fabulous, beautiful, and wow….so incredibly athletic and strong. I loved seeing how fit they were.  As far as my skills? Well….I can stay in a straight line pretty well when attempting to walk like a toy soldier. And my bevel is not half bad. But my eye high kicks? Giggle. I mean really….knee high kicks are just fine, right?

My third workout was with Core Body Reformer by BowFlex and Jenifer Galardi.

This workout…this I loved and could actually DO. Well ok, kind of. But the Core Body Reformer transported me back to the days that I was in the pilates studio several times a week. This simple foam roller tube and bar with straps allows you to workout your core, stretch, and even get in a workout that will raise your heart rate. Even just standing on the tube engages  your core as you attempt to find your balance. Imagine then adding in light resistance and every single muscle becomes engaged. The good news is that I won my very own CoreBody Reformer and got to bring it home with me (as in, I got to walk through Penn Station in New York City with what looked like a battering ram on my shoulder)…and today is the day I will give it a go in the privacy of my own workout room.  The bonus good news is that when I fall off the tube because my balance, well lets say that there is room for improvement, we have padded floors so I will not hurt myself. :)

My fourth workout was…..

Well it was not organized. Nor was it really a workout. But standing all day from 8 am to 11 pm…that is an emotional and a physical workout. And? The days of my walking around a city in heels at a pretty good speed? Right…those days are OVER. But my days of trying out new workouts in the hope of learning new strategies and ways to get fit? Not over. Not by a long shot.

So yes, I go to social media conferences to get fit. And I am proud of it.

Ok, I am curious about the Core Body Reformer. Does that really work? I am thinking about buying it as a gift, but until now I had no idea if anyone I knew had one.

Loved working out with you at Radio City! I ran at 5am each morning through Central Park. It was so beautiful! I love you. And need to see you more.

That’s amazing! I count it good if I can get one run in the entire time I’m gone and you did EVERYTHING. How fun!

You made it sound so neat that now I regret being squeamish about adding workouts to the intensity of the conference. Great post!
