Giving Tuesday

by Elena on November 27, 2012 in Giving Back

Today is an important day. It is not just November 27th. It is not just the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It is #GivingTuesday. A day that symbolizes the potential impact that each of us can have to help build capacity in others through gestures, through actions, through whatever it is that we can do.

GivingTuesday

On Tuesday November 27, 2012 charities, families, businesses and individuals are coming together to transform the way people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season….And together we’ll create ways to give more, give better and givesmarter.– from #GivingTuesday

Social action is not just a nebulous concept that does not pertain to us. What we do, what we give of our time, our efforts, our resources….matters.  In concrete ways.

What am I doing for #GivingTuesday?

Good question. The first thing I am doing is making a donation and supporting Girl Up.  I first learned about Girl Up during the Social Good Summit earlier this fall and was struck by the maturity and sense of responsibility of the teen advisor that shared her story and why it was critical to empower young girls.

GirlUp

Girl Up is a campaign of the United Nations Foundation that fosters leadership in young girls around the world. The vision tells it all:

Girl Up envisions a world where all girls, no matter where they live, have the opportunity to become educated, healthy, safe, counted and positioned to be the next generation of leaders. From Girl Up

The second way I am participating in #GivingTuesday is by involving my daughter in discussions of how she is going to give back.  She already knows about Shot@Life and believes in the power of vaccines to help children have the opportunity to experience all the milestones.  Sharing campaigns like Girl Up and 10×10, another campaign focused on empowering girls around the globe with a film that is scheduled to debut in Spring 2013. Even at eight years old, learning and understanding  the realities of girls like her, around the world, is important.  From there, she can decide which partner she would like to support or take action about. Because even at eight years old, she is capable of understanding…relating, and doing.

#GivingTuesday is not just about giving money. It is about being intentional. I love this 24 hours of giving infographic that shows how you can cause change in 24 hours by just being intentional.

If you are interested in doing some shopping today, consider mixing shopping and giving at the new Shot@Life online store where your shopping dollars will go toward helping vaccinate children so that they can have a Shot@Life.

So…..what will you do? Today, tomorrow, next week?

Ciao Mom
