Half Marathon Gear Must Haves

Packing for a half marathon that is “out of town” involves a lot of thinking and planning. The last thing a runner wants to do is find themselves far from home, without their favorite things for a run.  So when I started packing for the Runners World Half Marathon, I put together my favorite gear before I packed anything else.

What is it that I cannot do without?

My Garmin GPS Watch, Sparkly Soul headband, Yurbuds headphones, lightweight gloves, and compression socks.

And then of course, I think about the expo, where some of my favorite brands are there…just in case you forgot something, or um….decide that you desperately need something.  Which of course, I always do.

Like a new SpiBelt to stow my phone and a gel during a run, and a new, firmer  The Stick to roll out and soothe sore or stiff muscles.

Or a new wicking long sleeve shirt or arm sleeves…

Or a new comfortable running wind/rain jacket

I mean really….that is why we run right? So that we can shop? Or wait…maybe we run to eat? Or drink wine? Or travel to destinations? Or…maybe in an ideal world we run to feel strong and healthy?

Whatever the reason, must have gear that you know is comfortable is important when you are running a race, especially when you are traveling for the event.

What is your must have running gear?

Oh man, good socks and a good pair of shorts or a running skirt are my must-haves. I have an Under Armour pair of shorts that I LOVE and I wear RunningSkirts.com skirts. Either way, they shorts/skirts have to pull double duty with built-in underwear.

Thanks very much for the kind words about The Stick … I can assure you that every one who runs will appreciate The Stick, as it’s a great diagnostic tool for your muscles, makes your muscles feel better in 30 seconds, has you recover faster and learn much more about your muscles ( muscles that are fully recovered feel different than muscles that are not … with The Stick it’s easy to distinguish)

You have shared many of my favorite things! I love my Garmin most of all although wish they would carry it in a brighter color.

What do you like the most about half marathons? It is one of my favorite distances!

As I sit looking at my pile that was packed for the Runner’s World weekend it looks like my must-haves are my inhaler, Garmin and iFitness belt.

I have had the stick since my first marathon in 2001. Love it!

I also always bring electrolyte replacement…but I tend to cramp a lot. And I distribute them, so I clearly think they’re really important. :)

After a couple of really, really bad weather races, I also always pack some sort of rain gear no matter what the forecast says. When you go to a race expecting 90+ and sun and it’s under 50 and raining…you tend to remember that one forever.
