Listening to music while running is something that people either love or hate. I am one of the lovers…I have always listened to music on headphones while running outdoors. Music helps me stay motivated, it helps propel me, and it helps energize me. But every now and then, a music playlist needs to be revised, and realizing that I had not updated my half marathon running playlist in who knows how long (oh wait, since my last half marathon in 2010), it was time.
Plus…on top of new tunes, I had a great excuse to listen to music while running the Runners World Half Marathon….new sport earphones. My new Yurbuds, made just for women, to stay in my ears regardless of the steady stream of sweat that trickled down (or, as is the case with my sweat, poured instead of dripped profusely), were the perfect accessory for a new playlist.
My running playlist has many standard favorites that runners use to pump themselves up. But also…a few others that for whatever reason have become my newest favorite running partners.
Like the three songs that I emotionally dialed into both in the middle of the course and then again as I rounded the 12 mile marker.
I Was Here by Beyonce’. A song that is actually focused on leaving an imprint by being social responsible and active to make a difference, felt incredibly empowering as I battled my mental demons on the hills of the Runners World Half Marathon.
What Makes You Beautiful by Up All Night. Imagine me running with my hands pretending to drum (yes, as I ran) AND singing out loud. Imagine actually feeling beautiful (and therefore smiling) as you make the turn and can see the finish line.
The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha. What can I say? It may not be the most heart pumping song to cross the finish line…but symbolically after a run that causes you to doubt yourself….there was nothing better.
If I am being honest (and I always am), I listened to the playlist as I drove back home after the half marathon. I cannot even imagine what I looked like to the drivers that passed me…belting out the songs that had accompanied me earlier that day. And my Yurbuds? Are now safely secured in my purse to be with me at all times, just in case there is a chance to use them.
What about you? What are your favorite running playlist songs?
