Unapologetically strong does not mean insensitive or rude. It does not mean indifferent or iron-fisted.
When I think of being unapologetically strong I think of the fact that I am passionate and care deeply about certain topics, friends, and family. I think of being unapologetically strong when I share viewpoints that may nor may not be popular or may not garner me friends. I think of being unapologetically strong when I stand up for what I believe in because it is the right thing to do. It means going after my dreams…chasing them until I have succeeded.
When I think of a specific example of being unapologetically strong, I think of the day that I decided to leave my ex husband–ending my marriage to my daughter’s father. That was the day that I decided that I needed to be strong not just for me, but for my daughter who deserved to grow up with a better model of a loving relationship instead of living with parents that seemed more like roommates than individuals that were crazy in love.
That day may very well have been a major turning point in my life. A day where I finally realized I needed to say yes to ME more and sorry to everyone else, less. Work that I am still, if I am being honest, working on. There are days that I am better and days where I am worse, but over time and picking my battles, standing up for ME and what I need and believe in, is winning.
But I have also realized something else. Sometimes you need to say your are sorry, unapologetically, to be able to move on. Because sometimes, it is the only thing that can make a difference. Because sometimes the very act of apologizing, makes you even stronger.
The truth is that the more you practice being unapologetically strong, the easier it becomes. And the more you surround yourself with friends and family that do the same….the less apt you will be to find yourself apologizing for your actions or beliefs.
