A big thanks to Disney Baby for sponsoring this post and the Disney Baby “Little Character” Contest.
Babies are a source of magical joy, curiosity, and laughter as they surprise us each day with new sounds, movements, and expressions. Principessa is no longer a baby as she is going on eight years this fall, but as I watch her become more and more independent I remember back to her days as a baby.
My favorite magical moments with Principessa have always been, from day one of waking up in the hospital with her to a bright sunrise, watching her sleep.
The moment was simple. She was in her hospital bassinet, right next to my bed. The curtains of the room had been left open. Woken by the brightness of the sun streaming into the room I was able to watch my newborn girl for against the light of a sunrise for the very first time. I was in a trance.
Watching her entire body move in rhythm with her breathing. Later, as I brought her home and through her first year, I would watch her as she slept remembering that first morning. She would fall asleep with her thumb in her mouth, sucking away. But as she feel into deeper sleep, her thumb would fall out of her mouth and hand precariously in the air, leaving her to suck air. Watching her sleep, I was almost able to imagine how she fit inside my belly as she curled up into a ball, although she was clinging to her once loved “sleepy thing” instead of me.
There were plenty of other magical moments where as a baby Principessa showed her stubborn character or sense of humor. But watching her sleep, so soundly, so contently, her entire body moving as she breathed was something that I still imagine every night as I kiss her almost eight year old forehead. The image of her sleeping is soothing to think about. Even watching her sleep now, still at times with her mouth open as if she is searching for something to suck on, reminds me that despite all the early onset attitude, she is still that little baby.
The beauty of being a parent is that each of our babies is a little character in our minds. Now we have the chance to help one little character win $10,000 toward their education by voting for our favorite Little Character finalist in the “Disney Baby ‘Little Character’ Contest” and select the Grand Prize winner from the five finalists.
If that wasn’t enough, even those involved just in the voting have an opportunity to win in the Voter’s Sweepstakes. During this Finalist Voting phase, voters will be eligible for a chance to win a beach vacation, courtesy of Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows. Voting runs until July 19, 2012. You can vote daily. Disney reminds you to respect the contest and those participating. Disney reserves the right to review and disqualify votes, voters or entries that violate the terms and conditions of the contest. To find out more, visit the contest page and check out all the prizes.
