The Summer of Me: an update on my summer vows

Mid August in the life of a teacher brings on many feelings.

.

Excitement and dread.

.

Excitement about the prospects of a new school year, and dread in the realization that the summer, with free time, is coming to an end. As I lay awake this morning at 5:00 am, it hit me. I will be officially back to work…in two weeks.  Next week is an unofficial week where I, like many others, will begin the slow migration back into school- while at the same time, trying to make the most of every last free minute.  It also occurred to me that on June 11th, I had written about the 30 things I vowed to do this summer, as part of Mama Kat’s Writers Workshop.  It seems as if with a few short days left to complete my bucket list, it might be a good idea to see where I stand (current status is in red).

.

My summer vows to:

  1. …go to the gym or run at least 5x/week. Umm…there were some good weeks, but some not so good.  :( Still working on it…after all, I am Bringing on The Bridge!
  2. …spend at least three days not thinking about the upcoming school year.  Three days? Really, how did I think that was realistic? Given that I was taking an online class…I might have had one or two days.  But three?
  3. …take Principessa to shows or museums (aka: ditch camp). Wow, HUGE parenting FAIL.
  4. …go to the pool by myself…with my ipod and a book. Ooh ooh–I did this one! Though I went with my Kindle…and read through the Twilight Saga, and many books as part of the From Left to Write book club!
  5. …take Principessa to the public library. Another parenting failure.  I bought some new books for her, does that count?
  6. …keep my patio/garden weed free. (ok, lets be real: mostly weed free) Well…Rocket and I did work on it a few times.  But he has been the one to keep up with the weeds.
  7. …actually sit in the patio every once in a while. Not so much.I sat on the balcony when we were in Mexico.  Does that count?
  8. …organize my stuff and de-clutter the house. I did this!  Kind of.
  9. …visit the new house site weekly to and document progress on camera. Woo hoo, I did this too!
  10. …get the house ready to put on the market. Yup, yup, and yup.The “coming soon” sign is up…and with any luck, my experience as a first time seller may be documented for all the world to see (shh…it is a secret. Ok, not so much, but I should wait to announce the BIG news until it is official).
  11. …avoid getting sucked into General Hospital. Did not get sucked in. I did watch once or twice….but I could not tell you what was happening.
  12. …play with my new iphone 4 (woo hoo!!! can’t wait!) Um…yes.  Did this…lots.  Oh–and I played with my new iPad too.  Maybe too much?
  13. …play with my new blog home (coming soon!!! stay tuned!) New blog home success!
  14. …watch the World Cup (there can only be 1 winner… Italy of course). So we should not really go here…I did watch.  Italy did not win. Italy did not even….right, I said I was not going there.
  15. …watch Wimbledon. Did this too!I even met Chris Evert while I was in New York City (not for Wimbledon).
  16. …play tennis with Rocket. Um….I think we talked about playing.
  17. …play tennis with Principessa. Right, again…we talked about playing.  Have I mentioned how dreadfully hot it has been?
  18. …turn 36 gracefully. I did infact turn 36…whether it was graceful or not, I could not tell you.
  19. …go the eye doctor. Did this!
  20. …buy super cool new glasses- even if they are progressives or bifocals. Did this… and yes, they are progressives.
  21. …stay on plan with Weight Watchers.Did this….even made lifetime again!
  22. …try belly dancing at the dance studio at least once. Nope. Not even once. I have done a lot of dancing on the Wii.  That is something, right?
  23. …host Friday Follow on July 30th! Did this!
  24. …get in some spa time while on my honeymoon! Ah yes, I definitely did this! Pure bliss.
  25. …eat pizza in the middle of the night on my honeymoon! It was not the middle of the night….we settled for middle of the day on the beach. I am good with that. :)
  26. …schedule lunch or shopping outings with some girlfriends. Wow…nope.
  27. …buy a new purse. Thank you Rocket for my Hayden Harnett Trophy Satchel in Grape Shine!  Woo hoo!
  28. …put away my laundry…at least every once in a while. :) I did this!!!  Several times even!  Yeah Me!
  29. …make a photobook of our wedding pictures. Well…a little one yes.  The “real” one…no.
  30. …and last but not least: spend at least a few days with no set schedule, enjoying the company of my family. I think so.  ??

.

With a week and a half left…not sure I am going to be 100% successful on fulfilling my summer vows…. oh well. I am not sure if it is a good thing that most of the “me, me, me” items…I did. The non “me, me, me” items…not so much.  Maybe I should just chalk it up to needing a summer of Me?

.

Did you do everything YOU set out to do this summer?

.

Well I think the problem with this list is that it automatically sets you up for failure….30 things? Come on! My list says: go to the beach when sunny. That’s it. I made it there several times. Success feels terrific! You, on the other hand, are training for a marathon. I think you’re doing just fine and quite successful in mine and most people’s eyes!

It was a long list–but the good news about it being long was that I had things that I actually did do. Your list sounds heavenly. And thanks, I actually feel like I had a good summer. I am not sure where it went–because it seems as if just yesterday the school year was ending.

I have iPad envy. Oh, and yes, your glasses are way cool – I was thinking that very thought when I met you at lunch!

:) thanks. I do like them…though I am not sure that the prescription is right because I read better through the top of the lens (and the reading prescription is at the bottom!)

You are too nice…but yes, I at least feel good about the things that I did do. I feel like I did those with “oomph.” :) I think my biggest regret is not having spent more time with Principessa…though really, I am not sure where the days went.

Of course I didn’t! I don’t think anyone really ever does all they plan.

:) love it! And yes, that is true. Maybe we should make two plans…the realistic one, and the “in a dream world” one.

:) thanks. I feel pretty yucky about the ones I did not do (since several of them relate to Principessa). I need to get over the mommy guilt.

Great job on the list. I didn’t even bother making one. My goal for the summer was to end it with both boys alive and me sane. So far, so good with only about three weeks left. ;o)

I need that kind of list too. I am afraid I would be exhausted just thinking about it. I would have to add making the list to my list of things to do! :)
