Summer Vows

by Elena on August 10, 2011 in All About Me

Back in May, when the summer seemed endless and so full of promise, I made a list of things I vowed NOT do this summer.  There were ten items, and as I sit here torn between needing to go back to the job that I love and wanting these days of sun and blogging and social media to continue, I thought it would be worthwhile to check in with my list.

  1. Do not gain three pant sizes from sitting in front of the computer tweeting and actually keeping up on blog reading since I won’t be working.  Phew…..I managed to avoid this.  Thank goodness.
  2. Do not get so used to my lady of leisure lifestyle, immersed in my book while the pool,  that I forget to pick up Principessa during the few weeks that she will be at camp. Double Phew….I did stay on the computer a few extra moments too long on occasion, but luckily was never more than a few minutes late.
  3. Do not wait until after 6:00 pm each day to think about what to have for dinner. I am pretty sure Rocket would appreciate me having planned dinner at least occasionally instead of waiting for him to come home. Um, well….I failed here. Miserably.
  4. Do not let my jasmine or basil die from my poor gardening abilities. Woo hoo….not only are they not dead, but the jasmine is growing and blooming and making my very very happy.
  5. Do not wait till the last week of August to schedule doctors appointments and last minute errands. (a week full of appointments makes for a horrible last no working week!)  Well ok…technically  I think I failed here too. Principessa has one doctors appointment that week and I have a um….surgery of my own to go to.  Woo hoo for the last week before going back, stuck at home with my elbow in a sling.
  6. Do not get sucked in to the pre-BlogHer frenzy where everything I write, tweet, or talk about is BlogHer related.  (ok, maybe a day or two of this will be ok.) Ok then.  This is not going well. I got sucked in. I admit it. I am sorry.  Next year will be better. :)
  7. Do not let the summer go by without crossing the river and visiting with my local DC Moms at least a few times. Well….I did cross the river. Though it was for my triathlon training.  Major fail here. The saddest thing is that I saw more of my local DCMoms while in Asheville or San Diego than on our own metropolitan soil.
  8. Do not forget to start dropping hints about what I might wish for my 37th birthday. August is just around the corner after all.  :) He, he…..well, I did drop hints—or um…..maybe I made outright requests.  One of my requested items is even on it’s way from Amazon as we speak.  I may have hypothetically also tried convincing Principessa to tell me what she and Rocket were making me. The good news is that I know where it is hidden and I have not tried to unwrap, shake, or use my sleuthing skills to figure out what it is.
CycleOps Fluid 2 Indoor Bicycle Trainer

Yes sirree, I am going to be the proud owner of a bike trainer. Happy birthday to me!

  9. Do not spend the entire summer worrying about how many times Principessa’s future first grade teacher will email me come September. Right…well, this was just a silly goal. Of course I am worried.
  10. Do not forget to stop and enjoy the me time while in Asheville for Type A or San Diego for BlogHer. Two trips….just me–makes me a lucky, lucky gal. I should probably not forget to thank Rocket for being supportive of my leaving him home while I play on opposite coasts. Phew.  This one I did. I loved my time away at these two conferences.  More than I can even express.  And thank you Rocket for being supportive (no sillies, this is not the first time I have thanked him).

What about you? How did you fare on your summer to do or not to do list?

I think judging by how fab you looked in San Diego that you rocked your Summer!

To be honest, I didn’t really *have* a summer list. I thought this summer was going to be much different than it turned out to be, but that’s okay. Still, I was unprepared.

Well my herbs died but most of my tomatoes did okay. So there you go – I’m better off than I was last year when I didn’t even grow anything edible! 😉

Right.. A list… That would have been good! I uh… Yah, didn’t make one.
How about I make a Fall list and we connect in December? Now where’s that pen… Z

Seriously though, nice job on setting attainable goals and on attaining them!!

Now that would be fun! Fall is a deprived month as far as lists—we could be trendsetters :)

I suck at planning out dinner. And keeping herbs alive. So Kudos to you on both!!

Yes well, I didn’t know about this whole making a list with goals at the start of the summer thing . . . so . . . there is no list.

However, I do know that I wanted to make certain that we made it out to the cottage as often as possible because it is a space that we love as a family . . . I think that I have more than succeeded at that . . . so it has been a winning summer!
