Social action. Social good. Social Responsibility. Giving Back.
Many words. Many meanings. Many intentions.
But many questions can arise too. What does it mean to be committed to social good? What does it mean to give back? How do we advocate for social good from behind the laptop screens at our desk? How can one person really make a difference?
I have had the opportunity over the last year to be involved in some PHENOMENAL social good campaigns and efforts. Our Bloggers4Haiti trip that we are hoping to repeat in the coming year to continue our work to foster self sufficiency in women. The efforts of the American Cancer Society and the More Birthdays campaign. The ever so important effort of the UNFoundation to provide a Shot@Life for all children.
But the question is still asked by many skeptics. How does one person impact positive change.
And for once in my life, I actually feel like I have an answer. It is simple really. You just do it.
No, I am not rekindling the old Nike logo of “Just Do It.” I am simply saying that if each of us stood up for something we feel passionate about….if each of us took a concrete action to advocate for a cause that is close to our hearts…if each of us…imagine what we could do as a collective whole.
It is not hard. Pick something you are passionate about. Write about it. Talk about. Tweet about it.
But then? Do something concrete. Make it personal. Find a way to connnect to the cause. Like painting tiles that will be part of a mural that hangs in honor of someone that inspired you in place that provides a home away from home for Cancer patients during extended periods of treatment.

Or as part of Blogust, a relay to support the UNFoundation’s mission to provide children with a Shot@Life.
Participating in Blogust is easy…all you have to do is comment! Your comments are the key to saving lives and helping mothers and fathers hold on to their children. Every day, make a comment that gives a child a shot at life. Every day, $20 will be donated to Shot@Life because you took a moment to write your thoughts on a blog. To be counted, a comment should be at least a sentence and must be posted within 24 hours of the post being published.
I will be adding my own voice as part of the Blogust relay on August 14th. I hope you will join me then by commenting, and every day in August across the internet. Blogust has already gotten started. Cecily Kellogg, CC Chapman, Liz Gumbinner, Amy Graff, and Ana Roca Castro kicked things off during the first week. The relay continues every today with Isabel Kallman and runs until the 31st. You can follow along on twitter at #Blogust.
Whether you are commenting, organizing, advocating, or crafting it is easy to participate in social action. The question is…what will you do to get involved?
I am a UNFoundation Social Good Fellow for Shot@Life. No compensation was received for my participation. I am also a member of the American Cancer Society Blogger Advisory Council. All opinions are my own.
