I became a fan of video game workout systems last year. My first go around was on the Wii, and I liked it. But then, last year, during my days at BlogHer10 in New York City, I came across something like nothing else I had ever done before: XBox Kinect and Ubisoft’s Your Shape Fitness Evolved workout. This was a full body, full everything workout…and I wanted it. Patience not being something I am particularly good at, once we moved into our new house, my aunt generously gifted us an XBox…and a few days later, Your Shape Fitness Evolved was on it’s way to my house from Amazon.
There is a fitness test. There is a camera. There is no holding back. You can set goals and workout with a trainer, take a fitness class, or play gym style games. There are tutorials for every new move, and because of the amazing Your Shape™ Fitness Evolved’s Player Projection technology, lights on your online silhouette help you maintain good form. It is tailored to you, as you get better you unlock more and more workouts, games, and classes. I find it much easier to control than other fitness games, and love the hands free action that allows you to focus on the moves rather than holding the remote in the correct position.
Currently, my fitness plan is based on running and using the p90x program, but Your Shape Fitness Evolved takes center stage a few times a week. The Zen fitness class may be the the only yoga workout that I actually have ever enjoyed. It is calming, truly helping you capture that “zen” state of mind. (This from someone who has cursed her way through many a yoga workout). Principessa even does it at times, as she is the yoga guru in our house (that is what happens when her school offers yoga once a week). Although she is small, and only six, she is able to follow the instructions and use the workout along with me creating a wonderful family fitness time.
One of my other favorite things about Your Shape Fitness Evolved is the gym style games. Think back to the days when you were in gym class. There are four games to choose from, but the fun is endless! Loop-a-Hoop is a virtual hula hooping game that will have you shaking your hips and raising your heart rate. Light Race is a little bit like the old game of Simon but with your feet. Stack ‘em Up (pictured below) is a favorite because balance is something that I do pretty well. You catch falling shapes with a virtual board you’re holding in your hands, and then drop them into one of two traps that open on the sides. Virtual Smash is a fun take on cardio boxing where you use your fists and knees to pulverize boxes that appear in front of you. The great thing about these games is that multiple people can play (taking turns) so they make for great family fun!
Whether you are using Your Shape Fitness Evolved as your main workout source, as a supplement to other activities, or as a source for family time and fitness…there is no getting bored with a huge variety to choose from, advancing levels, and download-able workouts that are available for new games (additional purchases may be required).
You can buy Your Shape Fitness Evolved at Amazon or where other XBox Kinect games are sold. You do need to have an XBox 360 with Kinect.

We love our Kinect! Haven’t had enough time to play it lately. We have the Adventure game that came with it and the Dance game (I forget the official title) and the Zumba game. Would love to add this fitness game to our collection!! I’m always looking for at home options for the days I miss my workout and for weekend workouts- or just as a bonus!
